The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Queensland Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by US Private Equity Firm.

An iconic tropical holiday destination located within the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based private equity firm in a deal said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.

Details of the Sale

Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard regulatory approvals.

The sellers issued a comment noting they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.

The Island's Size and Amenities

Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.

Approximately thirty percent of the area is built upon, featuring a significant array of amenities:

• Five separate hotels
• More than 20 restaurants and bars
• Twenty shops and retail spaces
• An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
• A boat marina and a functioning airport

The resort is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, vendors, and local businesses.

A Look Back at Ownership

The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.

The island's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.

Blackstone has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in several countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
