As any major honors show nears, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
- A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
