Jude Bellingham Needs to Eliminate the Petulance to Secure a Key Position With Coach Tuchel.

Should Bellingham aims to earn his place once again into England’s best starting eleven, it would be smart to eliminate the dramatics. His reaction upon realizing that the substitute board was going up following a night of uneven play in Tirana was not good enough.

"I prefer not to make more out of it but I stand by my words 'conduct is crucial' and respect towards the players who substitute on," stated Tuchel. "Substitutions happen and you must accept them when you're on the field."

There is a lesson for Bellingham. There was no need for a strop. Kane had only moments earlier made it the national team two goals ahead in an inconsequential fixture, with only six minutes remaining and he, after a below-par performance, was just shown a yellow for bringing down an opponent. It was not a controversial substitution. Indeed it would have been unwise for Tuchel to not substitute him considering there was a risk the midfielder would make himself ineligible of the initial fixture of the competition by getting a another booking.

Drawing Attention to Himself

Yet Bellingham turned the spotlight on himself. It was impossible to miss the young midfielder's disappointment as he realized that his replacement was ready for Morgan Rogers. He flung his arms in the air and although he shook Tuchel’s hand on his way to the bench it was obvious that the manager was displeased.

This represents the hurdle facing Bellingham. He praised Marcus Rashford for providing the assist for Kane to score the team's second, but the rest was harmful to his cause. There was no chance protesting was going to alter the decision. The German has repeatedly emphasized following squad protocols and the necessity of acting professionally.

Facing Examination

He, left out of the team last month, is being watched carefully since coming back to the team in the current camp. In effect his place has been in question and he has not done himself any favours with his response to coming off the pitch as England wrapped up a ideal group stage by overcoming a spirited effort from their opponents.

Tactics and Formation

As a result the jury is out on whether the squad function at their best when Bellingham plays. What we saw was open to interpretation. Tuchel tried new things from Tuchel early on. He has provided the squad organization and direction over the past few matches, building with a No 6, a box-to-box player, a No 10 and out-and-out wingers, but it felt different against Albania. Quansah was given his first cap, Wharton started for the first time for England and the positioning of the defender as a part-time midfielder created a similar look to City's historic treble-winning side.

A Game of Two Halves

Bellingham had ups and downs. He set up a shot for his teammate during the second half but frequently appeared overly eager to shine. Several hurried and errant passes. An unnecessary confrontation against an opponent early on. England were ragged for much of the second half. One Albania chance resulted from Bellingham squandered possession. His booking came after an opponent took the ball to Broja and committed a foul on the attacker.

Squad Strength Shows

Ultimately the squad's strength was decisive. Tuchel introduced Foden, who looked more comfortable to the spot occupied by Bellingham earlier in the match, and the Arsenal winger. Later Saka whipped in a corner for Kane to break the deadlock. This served as a reminder that dead-ball situations will play a key role next summer.

Connection Remains

Still, though, the focus was on Bellingham. The brilliance of Rashford’s assist for Kane’s header was a little lost due to the fuss of the substitution incident. When the match concluded, the focus was on him. Tuchel came over to his side and pushed the player to acknowledge the travelling England fans. Their relationship remains intact. Tuchel hasn't decided to abandon the player just yet. Yet whether Tuchel is inclined to offer him centre stage is not guaranteed.
