The star has revealed that she no longer feels suitable to comment publicly countering the Trump administration, worried it could worsen unhelpful debate and further divisions throughout the country.
Speaking with media, the Oscar winner shared, “Back in Trump’s initial term, I thought I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off. But it’s become clear, through repeated campaigns, public figures have no real impact in any way on who people vote for.”
Lawrence added, “Why continue? I’m just expressing personal views on a matter that’s going to add fuel to a fire dividing the country apart.”
The actress has admitted freely about voting for both Republican and Democratic contenders over the years. Raised by a right-leaning family in Kentucky, she cast her ballot for John McCain in 2008 prior to switching to the Democrats and explaining she recognized during the Obama era that voting Republican was opposing her personal freedoms as a female citizen.
Several years ago, she remarked that Trump winning the presidency might signal “a disaster” and endorsed Joe Biden in the 2020 election. During the most recent election, she gave her endorsement to Vice President Harris, “since I believe she’s a strong contender and I trust that she will take all necessary steps to protect reproductive rights.”
Jennifer Lawrence was joined by many in the entertainment industry in her opposition to Donald Trump as a candidate for re-election, but the lack of leverage public figures have over the voting intentions was underscored by his election win.
“This upcoming term feels different,” said the actress of his leadership. “As he said what he was going to do. We were aware of his actions for his first term. He was very clear. And voters made that decision.”
The actor is discussing Die, My Love, Lynne Ramsay’s movie in which she plays a new mother who faces challenges with her emotional state in the countryside. At a press conference for the movie in Venice, Lawrence addressed the situation in the Middle East: “I feel fear. It’s horrifying. What’s happening is no less than a genocide and it’s awful.”
Lawrence added by expressing that she was disappointed by “the hostility in the conversations of the political landscape currently and how that is going to be commonplace to the children now. It’s going to be typical to them that elected officials deceive.”
The actor attempted to refocus anger about the conflict to policymakers rather than entertainers. “Stay focused on those accountable,” she advised, in what many took to be a reference to the declaration signed by thousands of arts community members to avoid Israeli film institutions.
Lawrence, who won an Oscar aged 22 for her performance in the acclaimed film, is generating Oscar buzz for her portrayal in Die, My Love. While Lynne Ramsay has rejected the plot being interpreted as one of maternal mental health issues and psychosis, Lawrence revealed that she did relate to elements of her film narrative after the delivery of her second son, shortly after filming concluded.
“It was fear regarding my baby,” she commented, “envisioning every potential danger, and then doubting everything that I was doing. I was already in therapy, but I got on a medication called the prescription and I took it for a short period and it was effective.”
Jennifer Lawrence also mentioned of the freeing requirement of completing nude scenes in the project while she was expecting and couldn’t work out.
“It’s refreshing,” she commented, of being forced to set aside self-consciousness. “Truly, I occasionally wonder where I’m like, What technically are the differences between me and a prostitute? But it isn’t a major concern.”
