The head of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who indicated the United Kingdom might have hit pizza saturation while expanding the chain into poultry items has been ousted after conflicts with its governing body.
Rennie is departing after only 24 months in leadership, and will be succeeded on an acting basis by the company's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while Domino's searches for a permanent CEO.
Rennie, who served at the company for a substantial period, had aimed to redirect Britain's largest pizza takeaway chain towards chicken offerings, remarking recently there was not “significant expansion” left in the UK's pizza market. He noted poultry was the fastest-growing protein in the world.
It is understood that there was tension between Rennie and the governance team over his strategy and direction, although the company's official statement said he was stepping down “by mutual agreement”.
In September, Domino's launched its poultry brand – which Rennie described as a “major strategic shift” for the organization – and is testing it in 210 outlets in the North West region and Northern Ireland.
While the company is still going to roll it out across its nearly 1,400 branches in 2026 as scheduled, it regards chicken products as complementary to its primary pizza operations.
Ian Bull, the Domino's chairman, said: “We are confident that there are a number of opportunities to drive further growth and performance improvement in the main pizza segment. We are focused on selecting the right chief executive to lead the disciplined execution of that development approach.”
In the latest update, the pizza delivery giant, which has millions of users in the UK and Ireland, said transactions dipped by 1.5 percent in the latest quarter. In the summer, it cautioned that the takeaway market had “become tougher” as it blamed reduced spending in the period before the government announcement and rising wage costs for below-target performance and a 15% drop in interim earnings.
Other pizza operators are also facing challenges. Pizza Hut announced the closure of 68 restaurants a last month, after the business behind its UK venues faced financial collapse.
Responding to consumer trends towards healthier eating, the company has introduced light items, such as its Thin & Crispy selection of bakes below 400 calories as well as meat-free and gluten-free pizzas. A family-sized pepperoni has over 2,300 kcal. A large cheese and tomato pizza has over 2,100, while a small has under 1,000 calories.
Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since the recent past, and previously worked for the gaming group William Hill. It is understood that she prefers not to occupy the top job on a full-time basis.
She commented: “Our team has a number of current expansion and performance initiatives that we will be focused on executing at speed.”
She added these involved further work on the organization's procurement system and menu innovation, and its rewards program.
Domino's is also without a full-time finance director until March 16, when a new appointee starts from the drinks company C&C Group. For now, Richard Snow serves as acting financial officer.
